openDELvE: Dynamic Evolving Levee Environment | README ====================================================== Key Data -------- ### DOI/Permalink ### The latest version of this dataset can always be found at: [doi:10.34894/2WZ0S9](https://doi.org/10.34894/2WZ0S9) The database is also released on [Arc Online](https://edu.nl/38cdx) as a Arc/OGC-compliant web service. ### Licence ### The dataset is released under a [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) licence. ### Citation ### To cite this data directly, please use the following citation: > O'Dell, J.; Nienhuis, J.H.; Cox, J.R.; Edmonds, D.A.; Scussolini, P., 2020, "Dynamic Evolving Levee Environment (DELvE)", https://doi.org/10.34894/2WZ0S9, DataverseNL, Version 1.0 The journal article accompanying this dataset should be cited where possible: > O'Dell, J., Nienhuis, J. H., Cox, J. R., Edmonds, D. A., and Scussolini, P.: A global open-source database of flood-protection levees on river deltas (openDELvE), Nat. Hazards Earth Syst. Sci. Discuss. [preprint], https://doi.org/10.5194/nhess-2021-291, in review, 2021. ### Metadata ### INSPIRE-compliant metadata is provided with this dataset in each folder and as a general file for the entire dataset, and can be queried using your favourite XML/GIS platform. The metadata is also published interactively on [Arc Online](https://edu.nl/38cdx). ### Revisions/Edits & Contact ### Amendments, revisions, and edits can be submitted on the [interactive submission form](https://edu.nl/6pce6). Queries about the data may be directed to [Dr. ir. Jaap Nienhuis, Universiteit Utrecht](https://www.uu.nl/staff/JHNienhuis) ### Units of Measure ### The metadata contains specific data for each layer, but all attributes of distance (length, height, width etc.) are given in Metres. Where the source data contained measurements in another system, this was converted using the [NIST Guide to the SI](https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811). Design storms/floods are usually written as 1:n, however in the data are given as decimals, directly computed as 1/n. All other units are in the default of the GIS Platform and are therefore suitably described in metadata/interface help. About ----- Data from various disparate sources has been brought together to form to this database. This includes electronic (streaming) sources of geospatial data (ex: US Army Corps of Engineers' National Levees Database, UK Environment Agency Asset Information Management System) and raster data (ex: dike/levee maps, historical records, flood management data, reports, business plans). These have then been synthesised together to create the delta protection database. Where present, information on the flood protection measure has been included, however due to the various standards and publishing methods, this information is unfortunately not published for each and every system. At present, are translated to international English. A standardisation map is included in the supplementary data of the manuscript (in process). Contents -------- The dataset contains the following files, where **???** is given, this can be replaced with SHP (Shapefile) or KMZ (Zipped KML) : + **DeltaDatabase_???.zip** - Export of the Leveed Areas dataset describing areas protected by levees, defences, or similar. + **DeltaPolygons_???.zip** - Export of the Delta Polygons _(Edmonds et al., see below)_ + **LeveeLines_???.zip** - Export of Levee Lines dataset + **DeltaIndex.csv** - Export of the delta index containing rationale/narrative for each area processed Layer Inventory --------------- + **Delta Database** - Polygons imported or drawn of areas protected by levees, coastal defences, sea walls etc. Information on the source of each shape file is provided in the _LITREF, URL, DOI_ attributes for each feature. + **Levee Lines** - Line features imported or drawn of levee, coastal defence, sea wall features. Information on the source of each line feature is provided in the _LITREF, URL, DOI_ attributes for each feature. As of Nov. 2020, this is currently only vector sources (USA, UK, NL, Australia, EU Coastal) + **Delta Polygons** - Bounding vertices of delta shapes as defined by Edmonds _et. al. (2020, see below)_ which have been linked to the Global Delta Data and FLOPROS datasets _(see below also)_. Methodology ----------- The methodology and decision making processes for each object in the layer _Delta Database_ is included in the Journal entry of the Delta Index. The process and methodology is further documented in the manuscript (in process). The original student report is available upon request to the contact person. Interdependent Datasets ----------------------- ### Delta Polygons ### The dataset uses the Delta Polygons produced in the below paper, and kindly provided by [Douglas Edmonds, Indiana University](https://earth.indiana.edu/directory/faculty/edmonds-douglas.html) > Edmonds, Caldwell, Brondizio, and Siani (2020) Coastal flooding will disproportionately impact people on river deltas.
